Quote from article: "Inspired by the Cuban revolution in 1959, left-wing guerrilla groups started to take form in Guatemala in the 1960s as a response to a combination of effectively military governments and the continuation of a highly unequal form of land-ownership. The armed conflict in Guatemala officially began 13 November 1960, when discontented US-trained army officers attempted a coup against the corrupt and unpopular government of General Miguel Ydígoras Fuentes. The incident led to the formation of Guatemala’s modern revolutionary movement, and in response, the creation of a counterinsurgency state, which quickly defeated the guerrilla movements."
