THE MAITATSINE RISINGS IN NIGERIA

The The Maitatsine Risings, named after a religious leader from Cameroon that was killed in 1980, in Nigeria was a series of uprisings and riots in Nigeria from 1980 to 1984 which led to thousands of deaths. The followers of the sect that was started by Maitatsine revolted in Kano in 1980 and over 4000 people were killed. Revolts also broke out in 1982 and 1984.
