Update Season 2014: Log

By: Jon Brunberg | posted: 8/2/2014 6:14:57 PM

The annual update of the war database is now underway. Many articles are ”stubs” as they call it over at Wikipedia: they need more information. This in turn means that I have to study many conflicts of the world that I currently know very little about. This year I’ve decided to focus on wars in China from 1900 until the end of the so-called warlord era, around 1928.

I’ve also started to add new fatality figures to the database based on the latest release of data from The Uppsala Conflict Data Program earlier this summer.

A ”live” log of the updates:

August 10, 2014

The update of battle-death data for conflicts 1946-2013 will start today. During a couple of days you may find that old and new numbers are mixed. The update is estimated to be finished by August 12.

August 11, 2014

The update of battle-death data for conflicts 1946-2013 have been completed. Two new a conflict which reached war intensity in 2013 have been added to the list: Nigerian Govt. vs Boko Haram (2009-2013) and South Sudan Civil War (2011-13).

The database now generally uses data from the PRIO Battle-Death Dataset 3.0 for all conflict years 1946-1988, and UCDP Battle-Death Dataset v5-2014 for all conflict years 1989-2013. Correlates of War:s datasets are with a few exceptions used for the period 1900-1946.

A number of articles need better texts and there are a few minor conflicts in these datasets that needs to be added to the list. In the coming week the fatality numbers for the "one-sided", and "non-state" conflicts will be updated.

August 13, 2014

The update of fatality data continues with the one-sided violence, violence by a government or named armed group against civilians. The source is UCDP:s onesided violence dataset. The update is expected to be completed by thursday.

The following armed conflicts were added to the list, which now includes 256 wars:

Sectarian Conflict in the Central African Republic
Indian Govt vs Communist Rebels CPI
South Africa vs ANC

August 16, 2014

The update of fatality data related to one-sided violence have been completed. This is the most comprehensive update of this data category so far and therefore the best estimate for the number of killed civilians in onesided violence since 1989 has increased to almost 3.5 million. Please note that this number does not include civilian fatalities as a result of combat operations between belligerents.

New posts added to the list of wars:
Iranian Govt vs KDPI

August 18, 2014

This is the first time that also fatalities in non-state wars will be added to the list of wars since 1900. Today, the first posts with such data were published. The update will continue next week. Non-state conflicts do not include a state as one of the warring parties. They may be, however, appear in the context of a war involving a state, or as separate conflicts. I will include wars in the latter category only if 1000 battle-related deaths occur in a dyad in one calendar year. The only example so far is the Ituri Conflict, which was added today.

August 25, 2014

Several articles about minor conflicts for the period 1945-1988 were edited or added. This closes the update of posts related to PRIO battle-deaths dataset 3.0.

Thai Govt vs CPT (new)
Indonesian Govt vs Republic of South Moluccas (new)

Indonesia vs PRRI, Permesta and Darul Islam (merged two articles)

December 9, 2014

Donbass War (Eastern Ukraine War)
Libyan Govt. vs Insurgents
