DESIGN PROPOSAL: OVERVIEW
The architectonic proposal for a polynational war memorial includes a series of interconnected institutions and a memorial. This document briefly outlines the various parts of the proposed complex.
Objective
The proposal should present all parts of the complex and explain the functionality of the proposed institutions. The ambition is to create the most comprehensive war memorial in the world and the primary institution for collection of data regarding casualties of war.
Locations of Memorial
The memorial is planned to be built in six copies, on six of the world's contintents. No specific locations are named in this stage of the project. The complex should
be built in a landscape, close to a city with
good infrastructure and development possibilities. The nation that will host the memorial should have achieved a certain level
of stability, have a history of peaceful solutions to conflicts and should be able to provide the necessary infrastructure. The country or region hosting the memorial can expect
a boost in the tourist industry and benefit from having
one of the worlds most important landmarks on its soil.
Main Buildings and Institutions at each Memorial
Site
Each memorial in these locations will contain the following
institutions and structures:
A memorial displaying
the names of all those killed in acts of war since World War Two. The memorial
should be updateable so that new names can be added
whenever necessary.
An institution that deals with education, public exhibits and high-profile conferences such as negotiations between warring parties, which will include a department for data collection that should function as an umbrella instiution for all those organisations that are already today collecting data about war casualties. These institutions will be located in the Unimune building complex.
The Unimune consists of three interconnected institutions that are housed in three separate buildings. It will include a museum with public research facilities, which
hosts a permanent
exhibitions and a public research archive. It will also include a university with conflict and peace research
on the curriculum and a large conference center for negotiation processes.
An Interfaith Centre, open for practicioners of any (or no) faith.
A temporary, personal memorial area where visitors
can arrange and maintain their own memorials. In these
areas walls and other constructions will be erected
where visitors can place photos, flowers or other memorabilia
or even erect their own memorials. Materials will be
supplied by memorial staff. The personal memorials will
not be maintained by the staff and thus change over
time.
The memorial site must furthermore include areas for
administration, staff, medical units and security personnel
and and areas for high-profile guests such as presidents
and other prominent guests.
Infrastructure and Transportation
The memorial area will be located in a landscape
close to a nearby city. The main business in this city
will be to accommodate the millions of visitors from
many different countries and social classes that will
visit the memorial area each year. Large campsites,
budget and luxury hotels, transportation facilities
and restaurants will have to be built to fill the needs.
The memorial site will be connected with the city with
a separate highway and a close-circuit subway
system. Possibilities to arrive by foot or bike should
also be provided, but there will be no over-ground roads
leading to or from the memorial site.
Visitors arriving by car, foot or bike will enter an
underground garage right outside the memorial area to
which passages and elevators are connected.
The close circuit subway system will take
visitors from the city to the parking garage, the museum
buildings and the memorial ocmplex. The different parts
of the memorial can be reached also by underground walking
passages.
Security Issues
As VIPs such as Heads of States or other world leaders
will visit this memorial site many times a year a very
high level of security is necessary. These visitors
will arrive to the memorial trough a closed non-public
transportation and accomodation system, which includes
a VIP transportations system between the nearby airport,
high-sec hotels and conference facilities in the city
and the memorial area. A large-capacity helicopter platform
will also be available at the memorial area. While all
VIP areas will be sealed for the public it is of utmost
importance that the high-sec arrangements does not disturb
the ordinary visitors in their commemorative activities.
Nevertheless each visitor will have to go trough a brief
security check upon entrance, which can be extended
during high-profile events. The area and the buildings
have also to be designed for easy pre-event searches
and crowd monitoring.
Mobile Memorials
Each memorial site maintains several mobile memorials.
These are designed to fit in a regular truck. The mobile
memorials are constantly touring the continents and
therefore the memorial site must include garages and
repairing facilities as well as accomodation for truckers. |
