"After years of fighting, the Khmer Rouge ousted the sitting right-wing regime in 1975. The group installed a communist regime and began a three year long authoritarian and violent rule. In 1978, a new regime was installed with the help of Vietnamese troops. This marked the beginning of a new conflict period that included the Khmer Rouge, two non-communist rebel groups, the Cambodian government and Vietnamese troops. Despite a peace agreement in 1991, the conflict lasted until 1998."
