"After a couple of military coups in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the conflict over government in Iraq was restarted in 1982, when a coalition of the main Shi’i opposition initiated an armed struggle against the Saddam Hussein regime. The conflict eventually de-escalated and only sporadic fighting took place after 1996."Source: Uppsala Conflict Data Program (Date of retrieval: 12/12/07) UCDP Conflict Encyclopedia, Uppsala University
