"The Republic of Yemen was founded in 1990 when North Yemen and South Yemen merged into one country. The armies and administrations, however, remained separated and a dispute in the new government eventually led to an attempted secession by the southern parts of the country in April 1994. The secession was hindered by the northern army which seized full control over the southern parts in July 1994. Although the violence was halted in 1994, national sentiments have remained."
