a memorial for all wars: the Polynational War Memorial

INFO

INTRODUCTION

The Polynational War Memorial is a process-based, long-term art project with the objective to create an updatable war memorial commemorating all civilians and soldiers who have been killed in acts of war since the end of World War II. At the centre of the architectonic proposal for such a site, which is currently being outlined in the project’s first phase, is a memorial that will display more than ten million names. It will be accompanied by several interconnected institutions that focus on education, research, negotiations, reconciliation and data collection. The complex will also include mobile memorial units, parks for personal memorials and facilities for visitors, external organizations and staff. The Polynational War Memorial is planned to be built in six copies on six of the world’s continents and will function as the main structure of its kind in the world.

A proposal for a polynational war memorial complex is currently being outlined and three architect groups -- Testbedstudio (SE), Servo (SE,US,CH) and Raumlabor (DE) -- have been invited to design the memorial and the various parts of the complex. The completion of this proposal will mark the end of the project's first phase. The proposal is presented in detail in the Design Proposal section.

The project has been presented in several exhibitions, lectures and news articles. You will find more information about these events in the presentations section. The timeline will give you a quick overview of the project's history.

This website also includes a comprehensive library of physical as well as virtual memorials and a series of feature articles about topics relating to memorials.

If sufficient funds are raised and negotiations are successful the memorial, the plan is to build the memorial sometime in the forseeable future. The project's next phase will focus on this possibility.

The Polynational War Memorial Project is initiated and run by artist Jon Brunberg with generous support from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee. Please e-mail jon[AT]brunberg.se if you have any questions or use the form on the contact page.
