The Lou Nuer - Murle war is one of many intercommunal conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan. It has been included as a non-state war since the death toll exceeded 1000 battle-deaths in 2009 and 2011. The following quote is from UCDP Conflict Encyclopedia.

The Lou Nuer - Murle dyad is one of the most violent non-state conflicts in the world. Both groups lives in Jonglei and are cattle-herders. An historic animosity exists between the groups as they have been competing over cattle, pastoral and water. This animosity has been heavily used by different political elements with their own purposes. During the conflict between SPLM/A and the Sudanese government such ethnic tensions was used by the government. Also other politicians (local as well as central) have used the tensions between the two ethnic groups in order to empower themselves.
